Chapter 24#

I forgot how I replied to Pei Hao that day.

I seemed to have said nothing. Should I ask him not to hold a grudge against Jin Yu? That seems unfair to him.

Since as I said, Pei Hao and I have no connection anymore, then on what basis can I ask him to do anything for me?

In the late winter evening, snow fell softly on my head. There was no wind in the community, but the coldness penetrated to the bone. I had only been outside for less than twenty minutes and felt freezing. I don’t know how long Pei Hao had been waiting for me outside.

Me: Where is your car?

Pei: Do you think I can drive with this foot?

Me: You go back quickly.

Pei: Wait a bit longer. I’ll go back when you go up.

Me: ……

I knew persuading him was useless. The best way was for me to go home quickly, and then he would leave.

I made some food casually at home. I don’t know why, but I always felt my whole body was affected by the person sitting downstairs. I was particularly afraid that when I opened the curtains, I would find him still sitting there.

Then I wouldn’t know what to do.

Really, I’m not sure if I can resist the bitter meat trick (inflicting injury on oneself to win confidence).

Fortunately, when I opened the window, there was no one in the position where he sat.

It was already dark. The old yellow street lamp faintly illuminated the front. At this time, most office workers had already returned home, drinking warm soup, eating and watching dramas at home. But under the street lamp, on the snow, a person stood vaguely. I only saw his back.

He leaned on crutches, dragging a heavy leg, moving forward slowly step by step alone. Every step seemed to step on my heart.

Thinking of his high-spirited and dignified appearance on the basketball court back then, how could he one day walk unsteadily like a little old man.

I clenched my hand tightly into a fist, fingernails digging hard into the flesh. I wanted to calm myself down, otherwise I might run downstairs to support him in the next second.

He didn’t come every day, but whenever he came, he would stay for more than three hours. That happened to be the coldest month of winter here, minus five or six degrees. He just sat like this, didn’t come to say anything to me, and then left silently.

I dare not think about how frozen he would be when he left every day.

I would rather he come and say something to me, so I could lose my temper and provoke him to leave.

But he learned not to anger me now. I found I actually couldn’t do anything about him.

Why is he so stubborn?

So, when Pei Hao challenged my endurance limit for several weeks in a row like this, I started this thread.

After Pei Hao told me about him beating Cheng Yi that day, I sent a text message to Jin Yu:

Pei Hao said he only hit Cheng Yi twice, and Cheng Yi was fine when he left. But you said Cheng Yi entered the emergency room. Is there any misunderstanding in between?

Not long after, a call came back from there. Jin Yu’s voice was cold: “He said he only hit twice? Beat a person all over with injuries with two hits?”

“All over with injuries?” My body stiffened, not knowing how to reply.

Based on my understanding of Pei Hao in these five years, he disdains lying about such things.

But Jin Yu’s tone didn’t sound fake either.

“Injuries on hands, legs, back, even the face was slashed by a knife!” Jin Yu was furious when saying this. I should be glad I didn’t talk to him about this topic face to face.

Face slashed by a knife? I was even more confused.

The statements of these two people are too different.

Splashing water in a hot pot restaurant really doesn’t warrant slashing a face.

Then what is this that Jin Yu said?

“Did Cheng Yi say it? About Pei Hao slashing his face.” I felt I should start with Cheng Yi.

There was silence for a long time on the other end. Jin Yu spoke slowly, with a bit of helplessness: “He said he fell by himself…”

“What?” I understand this plot less and less.

I originally thought the biggest possibility of this matter was Cheng Yi lying, but he said he fell by himself???

“He is just deliberately going against me,” Jin Yu suddenly laughed self-deprecatingly, “The doctor said these injuries are definitely man-made.”

“How are you sure it was done by Pei Hao? Someone saw it?” I continued to ask.

“I checked the surveillance video on the roadside. He indeed beat Xiao Yi,” Jin Yu paused for a while, then said, “But a section in the middle of the video is missing. This is also the reason why I didn’t slash Pei Hao’s face.”

“Because you are not completely sure it was done by him?” I barely sorted out the sequence of events.

“Hmm,” Jin Yu responded over there, “So I’m still investigating.”

“Based on my understanding of Pei Hao, he won’t deny what he has done.” I was very sincere.

Jin Yu hesitated for a while and asked me: “You believe him?”

“Yes.” I believe his desire for revenge is not that strong.

“Okay, when I find out the result, I will tell you.”

Hanging up the phone, I fell onto the bed. What a mess, like filming a suspense movie, making people exhausted.

With Cheng Yi’s fearless and death-seeking personality, it’s normal to have other enemies.

My intuition is that it wasn’t done by Pei Hao, and I also hope it wasn’t done by him, otherwise my first five years were really fed to a dog.

[1st Floor] Chang Wen: Actually Jin Yu loves Cheng Yi miserably, right?

[2nd Floor] unbelievable,: The two scumbags match very well, don’t go out to harm others.

[24th Floor] Time Monastery: Although I don’t like Cheng Yi, being slashed in the face is too miserable, right?

Not long ago, I finally finished the English exam and got a pretty good score. Whether I can catch up with the summer application depends on this wave.

Thanks to studying seriously when taking CET-6 in university, otherwise I probably wouldn’t even get a passing score.

Continuing on.

About more than a month later, Jin Yu asked me out for dinner.

He said he found out. Cheng Yi’s face was not slashed by Pei Hao, but done deliberately by someone with intentions. He came specifically to apologize for what Cheng Yi did this time.

When he came, he was holding a large gift box in his hand, black, beautifully packaged.

“This gift box is an apology on behalf of Cheng Yi,” Jin Yu solemnly handed the gift box to me and said, “I specially chose this crowded occasion today. You can splash me back.”

Saying that, he pointed to the water glass on the table.

I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry: “Why do you apologize for what he did?”

I can still distinguish right from wrong. Cheng Yi is Cheng Yi, Jin Yu is Jin Yu.

And I am not a person who seeks revenge for the smallest grievance. Since he also received punishment, it’s over on my side. Just don’t let me have any interaction with him.

“He was just spoiled by me… Eldest brother like a father, also blame me for not managing him well,” Jin Yu frowned as he spoke, seriously saying, “I hope these can calm your anger, because I really treat you as a friend.”

If you really want to manage him well, shouldn’t you let him bear the mistakes he made himself? What the hell is you apologizing for his mistakes?

Like this, it would be strange if he could be sensible.

Since Jin Yu apologized sincerely, I also replied to him sincerely: “If you really don’t want to continue spoiling him, you shouldn’t come on his behalf today…”

Jin Yu poured a glass of wine and drank it in one gulp. After a silence, he looked at me, finding it hard to speak: “Because he has nothing. This is the only thing I can give him.”

I was confused. Isn’t Cheng Yi the young master of your family? How could he have nothing?

“This is not important,” Jin Yu saw my confused expression, then waved his hand and said lightly: “Before, he indeed had some misunderstandings about you. Blame me, I lied to him saying I was pursuing you.”

“Why?”

Why lie to your brother saying you are pursuing me?

A strange idea faintly arose in my heart, but I was still not quite sure.

Jin Yu’s eyes darkened, the expression on his face very complicated. He drank another glass of wine, lowered his head and didn’t respond for a long time.

Long enough that I thought he was drunk.

After a long time, he looked up, touched the gift box with one hand, and returned to his usual calm and breezy appearance: “I thought for a long time, didn’t know what to give you. Open it and see if you like it.”

Since Jin Yu didn’t want to say, I didn’t ask anymore.

“Okay, I accept the gift. Splash water next time.”

While joking, I opened the gift box. Unpacking the black box, there was a wooden rectangular box inside. A unique character “Xi” (Stream) was carved on the box. Opening the wooden box again, a set of writing brush, ink stick, ink slab and paper was neatly placed inside.

Looks like a very thoughtful gift, and very expensive.

“Thank you, a very special gift.” I was flattered, “Although my brush writing is messy, I can practice slowly in the future.”

“Thinking you are going abroad, so gave you something Chinese that you can take away,” Jin Yu had a smile in his eyes, “Otherwise, when you miss home in the future, there is nothing to pin your feelings on.”

I nodded repeatedly: “Thoughtful, thank you thank you.”

That day Jin Yu drank a lot of wine. At first we talked about his studying abroad, then talked about things in our industry. Everything was normal, like old friends for many years, chatting about everything.

Later I felt he had drunk enough, so I said let’s stop here today, you probably can’t drink anymore.

Jin Yu didn’t agree. He pulled me while adding wine to his own glass.

Seeing him swaying, I intuitively felt he was drunk.

Just thinking about how to persuade Jin Yu to go home, he suddenly blurted out: “That Pei… Pei Hao, how did you break up?”

I didn’t want to explain much, just answered hastily: “Personality incompatibility.”

“I feel you are perfunctory to me.” Jin Yu raised his eyebrows at me, with an imposing manner of not giving up until I say it.

I surrendered.

“Because he didn’t like me, he liked someone else.”

Jin Yu was full of question marks: “He didn’t like you but beat people for you after breaking up?”

My mood started to become irritable, and I whispered: “When I liked him, he didn’t like me.”

“Then he was really blind,” Taking advantage of speaking, he poured another glass of wine and drank it all.

“Stop drinking.” I wanted to stop him, but he slapped my hand away.

Jin Yu smelled of alcohol, no light in his eyes, murmuring to himself: “The old man is dying… those jackals, wolves, tigers and leopards jumped out. I just want… want to rest for one night.”

“Okay, you rest.” I understood. He just wanted to find someone to complain to today. He won’t go back until he finishes complaining.

“Too difficult.” Jin Yu muttered.

I sighed in my heart. Unexpectedly, this proud son of heaven who looks successful and enviable in everything also has such lost times.

Maybe some people are like this, always wearing armor, looking invulnerable. You think he is very tough, but who knows what he has to go through to get to this step.

Obviously Jin Yu is experiencing some unhappy things recently. I patted his back and comforted: “It will all pass.”

“Can’t pass,” Jin Yu shook his head. When he looked at me again, his eyes were red. He patted his chest, “He grew… here.”

I looked at his hand pointing to his heart, thinking which “he”?

Since I knew Jin Yu, his emotions would only fluctuate for one person.

The idea in my heart became more and more certain.

“If it can’t pass, then it can’t pass. Why must it pass?”

“You don’t understand,” Jin Yu looked through me into the distance, his eyes unfocused, “He is still young. Later he will understand what he really wants.”

“What if he understands what he wants now?” I pressed.

Jin Yu seemed to suddenly think of something, and actually laughed foolishly: “He said so too.”

“Some things are enough to seize the day, where are there so many laters.”

“Care about rules or commandments, if you like each other, you should be together.”

He listened quietly to me talking, not speaking. When I looked at him again, he had fallen asleep on the table.

Leaving me dumbfounded, not knowing how to arrange him.

If I take him to my house, Cheng Yi might tear me apart after knowing.

Send him home? I don’t know where his home is…

Finally, helplessly, I called Cheng Yi.

That person came very quickly, actually wearing pajama pants.

How anxious is this? What can I do to his brother?

“He drank too much, talking nonsense. Take him back quickly.” I pointed to the motionless Jin Yu, signaling them to leave quickly.

Really didn’t want to see Cheng Yi.

He looked at me in surprise, as if unwilling to believe I would return his brother to him.

He looked suspicious: “Why did you call me over?”

Me: “I only know your phone number. Who else should I call if not you?”

Cheng Yi’s face still had four big words written on it: Dare not believe!

“I said I’m just friends with him!” Seeing his expression, I knew he still misunderstood, and blurted out anxiously, “What he said about pursuing me was all lying to you.”

He was even more surprised, staring at me tightly as if to confirm again.

“We, are, just, friends.” I repeated word by word.

He seemed deflated, stammering: “Then last time, hot pot restaurant, I…”

“Go back.” I interrupted him, waved to him, indicating I was leaving.

He lowered his head resentfully, seeming quite embarrassed. Only then did I notice two hideous scars behind his right cheek. People nowadays are really ruthless.

Seeing his embarrassed look wearing pajama pants, I suddenly didn’t hate him that much.

Before, every time he saw me, he dressed up like a human but acted like a dog, with arrogant disdain. Maybe it was all his disguise. This person who is a bit overwhelmed today looks like a college student.

I watched their retreating figures, thinking, they should like each other, right?
