Chapter 4 - 1#

Wenwen felt that this wealthy and powerful Brother Jin was really too strange.

After seeing that man in the corridor, he became silent, his expression so complex it was unfathomable, as if somewhat disappointed, somewhat startled, somewhat exasperated, and somewhat… fearful.

Yes, fearful.

It was hard for Wenwen to imagine that a man like Jin Yan would show such distinct fear. If he had to use a metaphor to describe it, it was like being caught doing something bad, feeling guilty on one hand and ashamed on the other, an indescribable anger born of embarrassment.

“Brother Jin, are, are you okay?”

“…No, it’s nothing.”

“Do you know that person just now?”

Jin Yan looked at him with a strange expression and asked after a long while, “You didn’t notice?”

Wenwen was completely baffled: “Notice what?”

Right, Jiang Qin’s appearance was very different from his teenage years, and apart from Jiang Qin’s own parents, probably only Jin Yan himself remembered his looks from back then.

“Nothing,” Jin Yan said, “Let’s go back.”

He walked back to the private room with unsteady steps, subconsciously drank two glasses of wine, and felt his mind was a mess. Although Wenwen didn’t understand why, he was very happy seeing Jin Yan start drinking. After all, for people like them, besides tips, their only income was the commission from drinks. Some wealthy people who could drink a lot could bring them thousands in income in one night.

“Come, Brother Jin, let me toast you again,” Wenwen attentively mixed some red wine into the white spirit and asked, “Who was that person just now?”

Jin Yan asked coldly, “Are you paying or am I paying? Did I come here for you to check my household registration?”

Wenwen was startled and immediately smiled apologetically: “Of course not, of course not. I’ll drink three cups as an apology. Brother Jin wants to check my household registration? Feel free to check!”

What was there for Jin Yan to ask him? He didn’t speak for a long time, just drinking cup after cup. Probably getting a bit tipsy, he asked in a hoarse voice, “I always hear that kids nowadays like to play at puppy love. Have you ever liked anyone?”

“I…” Wenwen was stunned for a moment and said, “Of course I have liked someone, but in this kind of place… sigh, Brother Jin, you know it too, there’s no true heart in this kind of place.”

“Alright then, let me ask you. Suppose you fall for someone, and that person is penniless and doesn’t do anything good all day, causing trouble from time to time and dragging you down. How far would you go for him?”

Wenwen frowned and thought for a while: “What do you mean by not doing anything good?”

Jin Yan recalled the time when he was still a scumbag more than ten years ago and said slowly: “Fighting and skipping school, mixing with gangs, leading a group of little brothers to collect protection fees, going to juvenile detention every few months…”

Wenwen laughed: “What’s that? People like us see plenty of that.”

“Then what if he has been to prison? Of course not for theft or robbery, for other reasons.”

“Wait and see. If the sentence is short, it’s fine as long as he changes for the better after coming out.”

Jin Yan found it interesting and asked, “Then what if he has killed someone?”

Wenwen was stunned, his eyes fixed on Jin Yan’s half-smiling face.

Only then did he feel that under the dim lights of the private room, this man’s figure was like a lurking leopard. Although quietly dormant, it was full of danger ready to trigger at any moment.

“Jin… Brother Jin,” he trembled slightly, “I’m timid, you… don’t scare me.”

Jin Yan looked at him motionless for a full ten seconds or so before nodding.

“I should have realized earlier. Although you look like him, your courage is not even one-tenth of his.”

“…Brother Jin?”

“I knew from the start that his feelings are always delayed. At the time, he can always hold his breath and endure, but afterwards, he will think about it over and over for many years. But then again, that’s his good point. Once he holds that breath, no matter how difficult or dangerous it is, he can get through it. Even the boldest person is not as reliable as him.”

Jin Yan stared at the wine bottle. The light reflected from the bright red liquid appeared even more blurred, yet his gaze seemed to penetrate the surrounding extravagant vanity, vaguely seeing the very distant past.

“I have never admired anyone in my life. When I was young, I felt even more that I could fight against the heavens. However, meeting him, I learned what it means to bow down in defeat.”

“Let me tell you, that person just now is a rare ruthless character in this world. If one day you go against this kind of person, don’t say anything, just run as far as you can.”

Kun Yang felt from the bottom of his heart that Jin Yan had no luck with romance.

Finding a wife with a flat figure and a look of abstinence was one thing, but he finally managed to pick up a beautiful boy at a bar, only to get dead drunk and impotent.

When a man drinks to that extent, let alone getting it up, even standing up is difficult. He and a few young lads used all their strength to help Jin Yan up and send him to the room. Before leaving, he instructed Wenwen again: “Take good care of him, don’t get any bad ideas. Brother Jin is not one to cherish jade and pity fragrance. If he gets angry and scratches your little face, don’t cry.”

Wenwen was already afraid of Jin Yan in his heart, so how would he dare to do something extremely risky like drugging him? He hurriedly nodded in agreement without mentioning it.
