Chapter 68#

The Croupier#

The target of this investigation was located on an ocean planet.

The planet’s ocean coverage was as high as 90%, composed of numerous small islands, with tens of thousands of canals crisscrossing like a spiderweb.

Most cities here were built in the water, with waterways serving as streets and alleys. Apart from aircraft, boats were the main mode of transportation. This unique geographical environment attracted countless tourists, making marine tourism a major feature and pillar industry. Consequently, an ancient mode of transport was still preserved here — the water cruise ship.

And their target this time was the most famous and luxurious star-class cruise ship — the Spectrum of the Seas.

However, not everyone could become its passenger. The Spectrum operated on a membership system; even wealth and power didn’t guarantee entry. Besides the exorbitant membership fees and rigorous background checks, one needed recommendations from at least three existing members. Despite the many hurdles, countless people still flocked to it.

On the surface, the Spectrum was an extremely luxurious passenger liner. It had a regular weekly voyage each month. Interestingly, its docking period coincided exactly with the appearance cycle of those goods marked with [G].

After reviewing the background materials, Ning Feng let out a cold laugh.

See, what a coincidence, right?

The members inside were all prominent figures. If they wanted any kind of luxury cruise ship, they could have it. Why insist on this one specifically? Were these people drawn to the ship itself, or to what was inside it?

So many powerful families had to give face, meaning the owner behind it all was definitely not simple. But based on their available information, the ship’s owner had originally been just a wealthy merchant. In recent years, however, his business had suddenly expanded hundreds of times over. To put it nicely, he had a great head for business. But what business exactly? There were also rumors that he had joined some organization, but they had never found solid evidence.

With such a formidable background, they couldn’t afford to be careless in recruiting employees. To facilitate the investigation, Ning Feng’s current identity was a waiter on the Spectrum. According to procedure, he had to apply for the job first.

The application process was complicated, full of various checks and hurdles. But the base’s information department wasn’t idle either. They had the means, background, and qualifications to arrange everything seamlessly. He just needed to show up for the interview and improvise a bit to pass.

Two days later, Ning Feng boarded the Spectrum.

**

The evening lights came on, and the steam whistle roared.

The massive ship sailed into the deep sea, like a brilliant star vanishing into the royal night.

As the neon lights blazed to life, they illuminated the spacious halls, the grand entrance, and the stonework at the corners, all exuding opulence. Nighttime marked the beginning of nightlife. The casino inside the cruise ship gathered all kinds of tourists, gathered around the gambling tables, throwing their money around.

At one table in the corner, a crowd had gathered.

Ning Feng stood in the very center, dressed in a black suit. The sharp cut outlined the lines of his muscles and his firm waist and abdomen. Under the golden light, his tall figure looked like a sketch, attracting many to stop and stare.

“Queen of clubs, three of a kind.” He flipped over his poker cards sharply, and the table immediately showed three cards of the same rank. The corners of his lips curled up, giving a slightly roguish feel. “Banker wins, double the tip.”

“Oh, annoying~ I lost again.” The woman in elegant clothes across the table pouted, but she looked quite pleased.

“Handsome, you’re amazing~ Are all androids like you, both handsome and skilled?”

“When do you have time to teach me how to play cards?”

“What’s your name? I don’t think I’ve seen you around before?”

Nimbly dodging a hand trying to cop a feel, Ning Feng raised his chin slightly, his face carrying a rebellious look, and pointed at the number 16 badge on his uniform.

“I’m Sixteen.”

His uninhibited smile drew another playful scolding from the woman, but they didn’t press further, urging him to start the next round quickly.

Maintaining a polite smile, Ning Feng clicked his tongue inwardly.

Supposedly gathering information, but he’d been standing here all day. He’d earned a pile of tips but not a single useful piece of information. At this rate, he could start a side business.

Speaking of tips, these should count as his, right?

Just as he was thinking this, he suddenly noticed the casino had gone quiet. Everyone’s eyes were fixed on the entrance.

Ning Feng turned to look and saw Yin Beichen standing outside the door, followed by Qiu Zhen. He was only wearing casual clothes, but the outfit was layered and stylish. Even the intricate patterns didn’t feel overwhelming; instead, they exuded a sense of aristocracy.

Because he wasn’t wearing formal attire, Yin Beichen was stopped at the entrance, negotiating something with the staff. But the aura he gave off was too imposing. After just a few words, the waiter stammered and made a gesture for him to enter. He strode straight over, stopping right next to Ning Feng.

Yin Beichen’s brows were slightly furrowed. “Why are you here? I’ve been looking everywhere for you.”

Instantly, all the gazes around them swept over the two.

Ning Feng’s lips twitched.

Was this guy forgetting his identity? He was Mr. Lu now, a distant aristocratic relative of a planetary governor. How could he possibly know a mere croupier?

His face stiff, he forced a smile. “Mr. Lu, I’m the croupier. Where else would I be?”

Yin Beichen looked at him quietly, his face unreadable. After a long moment, he finally spoke calmly: “Didn’t I tell you before? You play cards quite well. Save your evenings for me.”

Ning Feng was taken aback. Before he could react, the other tourists started complaining.

“Mr. Lu, that’s not fair! How can you come and hog Sixteen right away?”

“Exactly, I called dibs first.”

Yin Beichen swept his gaze over them. “Of course, the game is open. Everyone is welcome to join. Wins and losses are on me.”

He wasn’t putting on any deliberate act, but everyone could clearly see the coldness and indifference in his eyes. Yet, for some reason, they still couldn’t look away.

Admittedly, none of the people present were short on money. But reserving an entire table just for a croupier was still a bit too much. After all, he was just a servant. Flirting with him was one thing, but there was no need to publicly fight over ownership.

Still, this croupier was indeed impressive—witty and skilled at cards. His face was ordinary, yet somehow pleasing to look at, especially when he smiled, with an indescribable charm. And his physique was quite impressive too. Most importantly, he was an android. If they could find a way to have some fun with him, it would be quite enjoyable.

As these thoughts crossed some people’s minds, inappropriate desires arose. Lewd gazes roamed over his firm buttocks and legs, only to be scared off by Yin Beichen’s sharp glare.

Since someone was footing the bill, the others were happy to oblige, and the atmosphere at the table livened up again.

Ning Feng remained silent, glancing at Yin Beichen from the corner of his eye.

He knew the other was creating an opportunity for him.

The mission’s objective was to find clues about [G]. The more crowded the place, the easier it was to gather information. He had thought Yin Beichen was aloof and disdainful of interacting with others, but it turned out he could handle the social scene quite well when needed.

Sensing his gaze, Yin Beichen looked back at him, his eyes deep.

Ning Feng paused for a moment, his card-cutting action faltering.

Watching the two staring silently at each other, Qiu Zhen, standing behind, furrowed his thick brows. Suddenly recalling Qu Jingshan’s earnest instructions before they left, he immediately stepped forward and inserted himself right between them.

“Young Master Lu, the banquet is about to start.”

Quickly averting his eyes, Ning Feng continued concentrating on shuffling the cards. Yin Beichen nodded slightly, then turned and left the hall. Qiu Zhen pursed his lips at Ning Feng before hurrying after him.

Watching the tall retreating figure, a few women sighed admiringly.

“Ah… looking closely, Mr. Lu is quite handsome too.”

“Indeed. With his bearing and looks… he could rival Mr. Silver.”

“Come on, what status does Mr. Silver have? How can you compare them like that?”

Ning Feng blinked. “Mr. Silver?”

They were even more surprised than him. “You don’t know Mr. Silver?”

Tilting his head, Ning Feng looked curious. “Mr. Silver… is he very powerful?”

“Powerful?” One woman scoffed. “Mr. Silver is a close friend of the Spectrum’s owner. Even the military has to show him respect.”

Then they launched into a flurry of gossip.

This Mr. Silver was a friend of the ship’s owner, mysterious in his movements, very rarely seen. But whenever he appeared, the Spectrum would receive him with the highest honors. Word had it that his background was quite extraordinary—he didn’t belong to any family, nor did he deal with any factions, yet even the space pirates treated him with deference. Once, when his ship passed through a certain star sector, the Federation actually sent a patrol to escort him the whole way.

Many whispered that Mr. Silver was actually the real financial backer behind the scenes.

And this time out at sea, Mr. Silver was also on board.

“Indeed, very powerful.” Ning Feng’s brows rose slightly.

If even the Federation military had to show him respect, the forces behind this man were definitely formidable.

Worth keeping an eye on.

“Oh, why are we talking about this? Let’s play cards! Sixteen, I’m definitely going to beat you this time.”

Hearing this, Ning Feng pulled his thoughts back and flashed a playful smile.

“Then I’ll have to get serious.”

Under Ning Feng’s lead, the atmosphere at the gambling table was very lively. Everyone, winners and losers alike, was having a great time. Compared to the tense and oppressive atmosphere at the other tables, it was remarkably striking.

At that moment, two figures appeared on the glass corridor above the hall.

The head receptionist walked ahead, respectfully guiding the way. Behind him followed a handsome man in ornate clothing.

Though the man appeared languid, his captivating eyes were as sharp as lightning. He held a thermos in his hand. As he passed over the gambling tables, the laughter and cheer below caught his attention. His gaze landed on that tall figure, and he involuntarily stopped.

Seeing this, the receptionist in front immediately stood by, waiting silently.

“Who is that?” the man asked unhurriedly.

“Master, he’s a new croupier. An android.”

“An android?” The man squinted slightly, his fingertips brushing his lips.

The receptionist immediately bowed. “I’ll have his information prepared right away.”

“Mm.” Giving the android one more glance, the man withdrew his gaze and continued walking forward.

**

That night, the ship’s owner hosted a grand banquet in the ballroom. Most tourists didn’t want to miss the opportunity to network, leaving the entire entertainment district eerily quiet.

After his shift ended, Ning Feng didn’t return to his quarters. Instead, he wandered around the ship. Stopping at a stairway leading to the premium suites, he paused.

After hearing the tourists’ accounts that day, Ning Feng had developed a strong interest in this Mr. Silver. As a close friend of the ship’s owner, he must know some inside information. If he could sneak into his room and plant a listening device, he might find clues about [G]. It might even be significantly related to the Zerg.

The Zerg…

Just thinking of those two words made Ning Feng’s engine feel a bit hot.

He sent Qiu Zhen a message, looked around, and slipped silently up the stairs.

The quiet corridors were full of surveillance cameras, but the signal jammer on Ning Feng was powerful enough to easily disrupt the feed. However, the hallways inside were a complex maze. After turning a few corners, he lost his way. Thinking for a moment, he hid in a recess in the wall, about to read a 3D map, when he suddenly heard a click from the wall. A section of the previously smooth surface was opened from the inside.

This wall was actually the door to the security room!

“Who are you! What are you doing?!” The security guard immediately drew his weapon.

“Sorry, sorry. I’m the new croupier. I got lost.” Ning Feng rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly, forcing a dry laugh.

“Lost?”

The staff quarters were in the complete opposite direction from the guest areas, let alone the heavily monitored premium suites. And this guy managed to avoid all the cameras to infiltrate this far? Just lost?

The guard sneered. “Alright. Then I’ll take you where you need to go.”

With a signal, the guards on either side immediately stepped forward, surrounding Ning Feng.

Ning Feng found himself in a bit of a bind.

He had gone through the proper channels for his application and identity, so there were no issues there. Although he wasn’t worried about being seriously harmed, being flagged by them would make further investigation very difficult. Just as he was secretly sending a message to Yin Beichen, a seductive voice came from behind him.

“Sixteen, so here you are.”

Ning Feng turned to look. A red-haired man stood at the far end of the corridor. He had a strikingly handsome face, with sharp yet alluring features. He appeared elegant and languid, yet one dared not underestimate him.

Who was this?

Ning Feng’s brows furrowed slightly. He was certain he had never seen this man before.

But the security guards, upon seeing him, immediately tensed up and bowed respectfully.

“Mr. Silver.”

Mr. Silver?

This was the mysterious close friend of the ship’s owner?

His eyes flickered, and Ning Feng discreetly sized the man up.

Seeming to sense his gaze, the man narrowed his red eyes slightly, a smile curving at the corners of his lips. Then, slowly and deliberately, he walked over. Under the astonished gazes of everyone present, he wrapped an arm around Ning Feng’s waist.

“Honestly, I told you not to wander off. See? You got lost.” He even tapped Ning Feng’s nose, his tone full of affection. “Naughty.”

Ning Feng… was completely stunned.

He had never imagined that he, a hardened man, would be held in the arms of a seductive man and teased like this. But quickly, he caught the flicker of mockery in the other’s eyes. His brow twitched slightly, and he lowered his eyelids, saying nothing.

But to the others, this clearly looked like a lover being scolded and showing a guilty, pleading expression. Sensing the situation was off, a guard cautiously asked, “Mr. Silver, this gentleman is…”

“If your eyes are bad, you might as well gouge them out and install mechanical ones.” Instantly, the aura around Mr. Silver turned dark and terrifying. Yet, as if oblivious, he pinched the man’s waist and leaned in even closer. “Sixteen, which eyeball of his do you want to gouge out?”

Ning Feng: …

The security guards’ faces changed drastically. Without waiting for another word, they immediately bowed in apology and scurried away.

In an instant, only the two remained in the long corridor.

The arm around his waist was tight. Ning Feng stared at the other for a long moment. “Thank you, Mr. Silver.”

Mr. Silver smiled bewitchingly. “You’re welcome.”

“Didn’t you go to the banquet?”

“If I went to the banquet, how could I have come to rescue you in time?”

This line of talk made Ning Feng’s engine hum for a second, but he quickly composed himself.

“Sorry for troubling you.”

“How could it be trouble?”

The other man let out a soft laugh, as if it came from deep in his throat, but he still refused to let go. The rubbing of his hand even intensified. Ning Feng finally couldn’t help but struggle a little, finding he couldn’t break free. Unsure of the man’s intentions, he spoke with utmost respect.

“Mr. Silver, you can let go now.”

“Let go? Why?”

“They’re already gone.”

“Just because they’re gone, I have to let go?” Mr. Silver tilted his head, an oddly innocent expression on his face. “Or… do you dislike me?”

The almost flirtatious tone made Ning Feng raise an eyebrow. He laughed, unconcerned.

“Oh? Are you saying you’ve taken a liking to me?”

“Taken a liking to you? I thought it was you who had taken a liking to me.”

“You are of noble status. I wouldn’t dare harbor such illusions.”

“No?” Suddenly, Mr. Silver’s lips curled into a strange smile. He leaned in close and whispered slowly into Ning Feng’s ear.

“Weren’t you looking for me?”

Hearing this, Ning Feng’s entire body stiffened. His mechanical pupils contracted sharply.

Just then—

“Didn’t you hear him say to let go?”

A familiar voice came from the end of the corridor, deep and devoid of any warmth, like an echo from the depths of a black hole. Ning Feng looked towards it and saw Yin Beichen striding towards them, radiating a chilling, icy aura.
