Chapter 6#

The Little Waste Tames the Sinister Demon King (06)

By the time Ling Yan slowly awoke from his slumber on the bed, the sun was already high in the sky.

He stretched his body, sat up lazily, and caught a glimpse of himself wearing only an inner garment. A flicker of doubt crossed his mind as he silently asked, [Who took off my clothes?]

Ling Xiaoqi chuckled slyly. [The demon king himself did it~ He held you all night while you slept. He doesn’t seem as bloodthirsty as the legends say. I really can’t figure out how the nine taskers before you failed.]

Ling Yan leaned against the edge of the bed, yawning idly.

[Where is he?]

[Something happened outside the city. He went to deal with it—should be back in a few days.]

Ling Yan nodded and turned over to get off the bed. He walked slowly to the door, and as soon as he pushed it open, a clear, gentle voice sounded.

“Demon Queen, you’re awake.”

The sunlight outside was blazing. Ling Yan squinted slightly from the glare, and only after a moment of adjustment did he glance to the side.

Yan Xi was also stunned when he saw Ling Yan’s appearance. Yesterday, with the bridal veil still covering his face, he hadn’t been able to see his true countenance. Now, he was struck by how extraordinarily handsome and peerlessly beautiful the man was—more dazzling than any transformed spirit.

Could it be… that their demon king had a particular taste for this kind of beauty, which was why he treated the demon queen so differently?

Ling Yan glanced at him, speaking mildly. “I need to wash up.”

“…”

When there was no response, Ling Yan looked sideways to see Yan Xi wearing a blank expression. He explained patiently, “I need to wash up—water, a toothbrush. Understand?”

Yan Xi hesitated, then confirmed, “Wash up?”

“Yes.”

After a moment of hesitation, Yan Xi asked in confusion, “Does the demon queen not know the cleansing spell? With one incantation, the whole body is instantly clean and fresh.”

Ling Yan let out a soft laugh, a hint of amusement flickering in his tea-colored eyes, as if he had thought of something interesting. He reached out a hand and made a show of struggling to channel his spiritual power—

A faint glimmer of light flickered in his palm, then vanished in an instant.

Yan Xi stared at him, bewildered.

Ling Yan raised his well-defined brow and stated matter-of-factly, “As you can see, I’m a waste.”

“…”

Now he understood why the king had specifically left him to take care of the demon queen.

For three straight days of serving the demon queen, Yan Xi had endured untold hardships.

All because this demon queen was far too delicate—he insisted on washing up every morning and evening, needed extra clothes when cold, and a fan when hot. But what gave Yan Xi the biggest headache of all was the demon queen’s three daily meals.

The food had to be flawless, and raw food was absolutely forbidden.

You see, as demons, what they loved most was a mouthful of raw meat—biting into it, blood dripping down—that was the true flavor.

But this human demon queen would only eat cooked food.

And so, he, the grand commander of the demon realm, the mighty and majestic great rhino spirit, was now diligently roasting chicken for the demon queen.

“Cough, cough, cough—”

The smoke from the firewood was a bit choking, and Yan Xi couldn’t help coughing a few times.

Ling Yan was lounging on a soft couch nearby, eyes closed in rest. Upon hearing the sound, the corners of his mouth lifted slightly as he drawled, “Roast it well.”

“Yes, sir.”

Yan Xi turned the chicken vigorously, but his mind wandered—and he burned it.

This was obviously not fit to serve to the demon queen. Deeming it a waste to throw away, he simply opened his mouth wide and swallowed the whole thing.

Huh.

It actually tasted pretty good.

Definitely more fragrant than raw meat.

Yan Xi took out another chicken and roasted it with utmost care, his eyes fixed on the heat, not daring to be distracted again.

The next moment, the air in the courtyard seemed to ripple like water.

Mo Yan’s figure suddenly appeared in the center of the yard, his black-gold serpent robe shimmering with a dull golden luster in the sunlight, his aura fierce and commanding. Yan Xi looked up and immediately rose to bow respectfully. “Your Majesty, you’ve returned.”

“Mm.”

Ling Yan, who had been resting on the couch, slowly opened his eyes and gazed toward the dark-gold figure.

He saw the man draped in a black-gold serpent-patterned robe, which accentuated his tall, sharp silhouette. His features were chiseled and exquisite, extraordinarily handsome. A pair of narrow golden eyes were as deep as an abyss, and the small red mole at the corner of his left eye was the finishing touch, adding a touch of eerie beauty to his cold temperament.

The whole person was like a drawn blade—sharp, dazzling, and so handsome it was almost unreal.

“Whew—”

Ling Yan leaned on the couch and let out an unguarded, flirtatious whistle.

He had traveled through countless worlds on missions, seen all kinds of men and women—handsome, heroic, gorgeous—but never had anyone struck him so perfectly as this man before him.

He said inwardly to Ling Xiaoqi, [Brother, this man… is kind of my type.]

[…]

What did that mean?

Was his big brother planning to… “eat” the demon king?

Ling Yan lounged sideways on the soft couch, propping his head up with one hand and lazily hooking a finger at Mo Yan with the other. “Come here.”

Mo Yan was momentarily taken aback, but actually walked over as instructed.

Yan Xi watched from the side, utterly dumbfounded. The king actually obeyed the demon queen so readily?

He couldn’t help stealing another glance or two before hurriedly looking away, muttering under his breath, “Holy crap!” The roasted chicken in his hand nearly burned again.

He quickly set the chicken aside on a plate and let out a sigh of relief.

Ling Yan looked up at the man who had obediently come to stand before him, raising an eyebrow slightly. Tilting his face to meet Mo Yan’s tall figure, he asked, “You’re Mo Yan?”

“Yes.”

Their eyes met in the air, as if invisible threads were tangling between them through the gaze, surging silently.

After a moment of stillness, Mo Yan suddenly raised a hand and waved. On the stone table beside them, a huge basket appeared.

Ling Yan’s tea-colored eyes glanced at the basket, then back to Mo Yan’s face. “What’s that?”

Mo Yan pressed his lips together, as if trying to think how to describe it in human language. After a long while, he said,

“A gift for you.”

Ling Yan sat up slightly from the couch and lifted the cloth covering the basket—inside the enormous basket was a heap of various hearts and lungs.

He was silent for a moment, then asked, “Can… this be eaten?”

Mo Yan frowned slightly. Thinking that these spirits had all been corroded by the dark influence, their bodies inevitably retained traces of filth, and his demon queen was a useless little fool with no spiritual power—if she ate it by mistake, it would be dangerous.

He pondered for a moment, then said flatly,

“You cannot eat it.”

Ling Yan slowly leaned in, the distance between them suddenly closing until he could clearly smell the same cool, pure scent on the man that the black cat had.

He spoke softly, his voice laced with amusement.

“If I can’t eat it, why are you giving it to me?”

Mo Yan’s brows knitted slightly, as if he were seriously thinking. After a long pause, he said hesitantly,

“Perhaps… for display. You… don’t like it?”
