Chapter 91#

Always Feeling Like He’s Up to No Good.#

“Yan Yi’s uncle is none other than Yan Junxing.”

The moment that name was uttered, Qin Zheng’s expression suddenly turned cold.

He stared deeply at Jian Yunchen, his gaze heavy and icy.

Jian Yunchen acted as if he didn’t notice the face that had turned as black as ink, looking back at him with a beaming smile.

“You investigated me?” Qin Zheng’s voice was low, a clear look of disgust surfacing in his eyes.

Jian Yunchen, however, began to laugh. The low sound of his laughter reached Qin Zheng’s ears, making the latter’s dissatisfaction even more apparent.

“You investigated me, so why can’t I investigate you?”

Jian Yunchen leaned back, casting a provocative glance toward him.

“The magistrates are allowed to burn down houses, but the common people aren’t even allowed to light lamps?”

Qin Zheng’s lips were pressed into a tight line. Seeing the smile hanging on the corner of Jian Yunchen’s mouth felt incredibly grating to him.

He always felt like this man was full of wicked ideas.

“What makes you think I would help you?”

Jian Yunchen propped up his face, a smile lingering in the depths of his eyes as he looked at him airily. “How can you say you’re helping me, Senior? You’re helping your beloved Xiao Han.”

“It’s been so many days. If Brother continues to ignore you and you don’t find a way to coax him, then the next time you meet…”

He paused deliberately for a moment, saying meaningfully: “It might just be at Brother’s wedding.”

Qin Zheng’s face grew even darker. He lowered his brow, scrutinizing Jian Yunchen.

Seeing Jian Yunchen’s smiling face, his intuition told him there was a trap, and he pondered how much of what was said was true or false.

Yan Junxing had no direct relation to him, but he had a very delicate relationship with his mother, Bai Yuqian.

The two had known each other since childhood and were always seen together. In the eyes of others, their lifelong friendship meant they were a default pair. However, everything changed abruptly after Bai Yuqian confessed her feelings.

After being rejected by Yan Junxing, Bai Yuqian secretly climbed into the bed of Qin Yanchen, a married man.

Their relationship completely shattered after Bai Yuqian showed no remorse for staying with Qin Yanchen, and they never spoke again.

Until Qin Zheng was born.

Bai Yuqian died of complications while giving birth to him. Because her status could not be brought to light, her final funeral arrangements were handled personally by Yan Junxing.

During his childhood, Yan Junxing had looked after him quite a bit. It was only as he grew up that contact gradually decreased. It was also only after he became an adult that he learned about the past between Yan Junxing and his mother.

Qin Zheng looked at Jian Yunchen, frowning deeply. Those old memories churned in his mind, making his gaze toward Jian Yunchen grow even colder. “Your words aren’t worth trusting. You know yourself how low your credibility is.”

Jian Yunchen shrugged indifferently. “If you don’t believe me, you can go check. Brother is the main person in charge of this project. The goods are stuck, and it’s because of him. The person who should be worried truly isn’t me.”

Qin Zheng paused. “Why do you want to help me? Or rather, why help Xiao Han?”

“How can this be considered helping you two?” Jian Yunchen smiled. “Jiang Sheng promised me that as long as I resolve this trouble, the position of project manager will be handed over to me. Helping you is also helping myself.”

Qin Zheng looked at him with disdain. “I knew you were up to no good.”

“This—” Jian Yunchen looked him straight in the eye, the ambition in his gaze burning like a flame: “is called each getting what they need.”

“You help Brother, and he will remember that favor. But regardless, because of the mess he caused, the person in charge will be replaced. So why can’t that replacement be me?”

“It’s not just Brother…” Jian Yunchen’s tone was gentle, his gaze drifting lightly over Qin Zheng’s face. “Even Jiang Sheng might have a change of opinion about you.”

When dealing with a suspicious person like Qin Zheng, one couldn’t use entirely lies, nor entirely the truth. A mix of half-truths and half-veiled revelations, placing the chips in front of him beforehand, was the only way to drive him effectively.

Sure enough, upon hearing that last sentence, Qin Zheng’s expression slowly shifted.

He looked up at Jian Yunchen, his eyes filled with warning: “Don’t think that just because I’ve helped you a few times, we’re in the same boat. You and I will never be the same kind of person.”

Jian Yunchen couldn’t be bothered to argue about who was really helping whom.

However, hearing that last sentence, he couldn’t help but let out a sneer.

What does he mean, “not the same kind of person”?

He tilted his chin up and looked down at Qin Zheng with a faint gaze, watching that face full of bluster.

In my eyes, it’s precisely because we’re the same kind of person.

The audit passed smoothly. A day before the delivery date, the quantity was replenished in time.

Yan Yi didn’t come looking for trouble again.

The matter seemed to have passed peacefully.

However, the undercurrents beneath the surface—the shifts in power—were proceeding quietly.

Jian Yunchen successfully became the project manager.

The more satisfied Jiang Sheng was with Jian Yunchen, the more dissatisfied he became with Jiang Yunhan.

The scales were gradually beginning to tilt, and the protagonist’s power was gradually being suppressed.

The system’s warnings also grew more intense.

It was constantly reminding Qin Mu that he could not allow the situation to develop this way, or he would face an irreversible outcome.

During the meeting, Qin Mu listened to its nagging half-heartedly, not even bothering to lift his eyelids.

He propped up his face, his brows drooping. He had been very busy these past few days and hadn’t slept well. Being forced to attend some early morning meeting meant he didn’t catch much of what was said; instead, he was constantly yawning.

This appearance quickly drew Qin Yanchen’s attention.

And his dissatisfaction.

He slammed his hand heavily on the table.

The people who snapped awake simultaneously included Qin Mu and several others.

Qin Yanchen’s gaze swept heavily across the room before finally landing on Qin Mu’s face.

Qin Mu raised a hand to cover a yawn, looking at him with bleary eyes.

“Some people think that just because they hold shares, they have nothing to fear. A company is always a place where strength speaks for itself. Why don’t you ask yourself at every moment what value you’ve brought to the company? You enjoy everything with a clear conscience, without mentioning a single bit of contribution.”

Qin Mu blinked at him innocently, pointed a finger at himself, and asked lazily, “President Qin, are you talking about me?”

Qin Yanchen’s face turned black, and he added stiffly, “If you don’t know how, then learn more.”

The main content of this meeting was regarding the cooperation with “Zhaohui.” To put it bluntly, it was a commendation ceremony for Qin Zheng.

During the last meeting, everyone was half in support and half against this project. But Qin Zheng had somehow settled the supply issue, and everyone’s tune had collectively shifted into a chorus of praise.

Listening to the various flowery phrases like “young and promising” and “foresight,” Qin Mu felt like he was in a dream.

Qin Mu propped up his face, arched an eyebrow at Qin Zheng, and said in a drawn-out tone:

“Then I naturally must learn well from Manager Qin.”

Qin Zheng’s brow smoothed out. He leaned back naturally against the chair and nodded slightly. He appeared expressionless, calmly accepting the compliment, but the corners of his eyes were actually turned up—a picture of smug satisfaction.

In Qin Mu’s eyes, it looked somewhat like a “villain achieving success.”

He curled his lips into a smile and slowly completed his next sentence: “Except…”

“I know the company’s stock best. I’m truly curious how Manager Qin managed to close this deal without touching the company’s inventory…?”

The corner of Qin Zheng’s mouth froze. He slowly looked up at Qin Mu.

His gaze was as cold as tempered ice, carrying an unmasked warning.

Qin Mu saw it and laughed even more brightly.

“I found an outsourcing company and solved the supply issue. I cleared this with President Jiang beforehand. Is there a problem?”

Qin Zheng stated firmly.
